Details
Black sesame seeds are white sesame seeds with their hulls left intact - and that distinction matters more than it might seem. The hull is where much of the nutritional density lives: calcium, magnesium, and iron that white sesame loses in processing, alongside sesame's already impressive complement of antioxidants, phytosterols, and plant protein. The result is a seed that is nutritionally richer, deeper in flavor, and darker in color than its hulled counterpart.
In Ayurveda, black sesame is specifically associated with Vata balance. Vata governs movement, dryness, and the nervous system, and when it is out of balance it manifests as anxiety, dry skin, brittle hair and nails, constipation, and restlessness. Black sesame is considered one of the most effective foods for addressing these states - warming, oily, and deeply nourishing in a way that counteracts Vata's tendency toward depletion and dryness. It is traditionally used to rejuvenate and protect skin, hair, and nails from within.
Surya's are toasted, which deepens the flavor and makes the nutrients more bioavailable. Sprinkle over rice, salads, noodles, or roasted vegetables. Blend into smoothies or nut milks. Use in baking. Or simply keep a jar on the counter and add them to whatever you are eating - the Ayurvedic principle of daily nourishment is built on exactly this kind of small, consistent practice.
- Vata Balancing - warming, oily, and deeply nourishing for dryness, anxiety, and depletion
- Black sesame = white sesame with hull intact - richer in calcium, magnesium, and iron
- High in antioxidants and phytosterols - supports immune function and healthy cholesterol
- Nutritious plant protein source
- Traditionally used in Ayurveda to rejuvenate and protect skin, hair, and nails from within
- Toasted for deeper flavor and improved bioavailability
How to Use:
Sprinkle over rice, noodles, salads, roasted vegetables, or grain bowls.
Add to smoothies or blend into homemade nut or seed milk.
Use in baking - breads, crackers, cookies, or energy balls.
Stir into yogurt, oatmeal, or overnight oats.
Use as a finishing garnish on soups, curries, or dips.
For Ayurvedic benefit, eat a small amount daily rather than occasionally in large amounts - consistent, small intake is how sesame's Vata-balancing properties accumulate over time.
