This is dinacharya - the Ayurvedic daily routine of hygiene and self-care that begins before coffee, before checking your phone, before anything. In classical Ayurveda, the coating that accumulates on the tongue overnight is called ama - unprocessed waste and toxins that the body has moved toward the surface during sleep. Removing it first thing prevents it from being reabsorbed into the system, supports digestive enzyme production, and gives you an immediate read on your body's current state. A thick white coating indicates sluggish digestion. A thin, clear tongue indicates good digestive health. Over time, the daily practice of checking and scraping becomes a quiet form of self-knowledge.
Copper is the material Ayurveda has always used for this purpose. It has natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that actively support oral health rather than simply scraping mechanically. Unlike plastic scrapers, copper does not harbor bacteria in micro-scratches and improves with use as its surface develops a natural patina.
Surya recommends using the tongue scraper immediately after waking, before brushing teeth or oil pulling - the first step in the morning routine, the one that sets the rest in motion. Pairs naturally with Surya's Herbalized Pulling Oil.
Benefits:
- Pure copper - naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial, actively supports oral health
- Removes ama (overnight tongue coating) before it can be reabsorbed into the body
- Supports digestive enzyme production and overall digestive health
- Supports oral hygiene and freshens breath at the source
- Does not harbour bacteria - copper's natural properties keep the scraper clean
- Durable and long-lasting - improves with use as the copper develops a natural patina
- The foundation of the Ayurvedic morning routine - pairs with Surya's Herbalized Pulling Oil
How to Use:
Use first thing in the morning, before brushing teeth or oil pulling.
Hold one end of the scraper in each hand and place the curved edge at the back of the tongue.
Gently drag forward to the tip of the tongue in one smooth motion.
Rinse the scraper and repeat 5-7 times, covering the full surface of the tongue.
Rinse your mouth with warm water when finished.
Notice the color and thickness of the coating - a thin, clear residue indicates good digestive health. A thick white or yellow coating indicates sluggish digestion or that the body is processing something.
Follow with Surya's Herbalized Pulling Oil for the complete Ayurvedic oral care routine.
Care:
Rinse thoroughly with warm water after each use.
Dry with a soft cloth and store in a dry place.
The copper will develop a natural patina over time - this is normal and does not affect performance or hygiene.
To restore the original brightness, polish briefly with half a lemon dipped in salt, then rinse well.
