A natural mattress on a solid platform base is a moisture problem waiting to happen.
Wood slats allow airflow. A solid platform - even a beautiful, well-made one - creates a sealed surface beneath the mattress where moisture from the body accumulates overnight and has nowhere to go. Over time, that trapped moisture leads to mildew growth in the base layers of the mattress, an issue that cannot be undone and is entirely preventable. The Coconut Coir Bed Rug solves it with a 1-inch mat of compressed coconut fibre infused with natural latex, placed between the mattress and the platform surface. The coir is inherently porous - air and moisture pass through it freely - which keeps the underside of the mattress dry and the sleep environment clean.

Beyond ventilation, the rug adds a firm layer of cushioning between the mattress and the hard surface of a platform bed, absorbs minor unevenness in the platform, and adds a small amount of height to the overall bed. It also works on slatted frames in highly humid environments where extra airflow is needed - Shepherd's Dream recommends two rugs stacked in those conditions.

Sizing

How to use
Place directly on top of your bed frame or platform surface, beneath the mattress.
For solid platform beds: the rug sits between the platform and the mattress - this is its primary purpose.
For slatted frames in humid environments: the rug adds extra ventilation above and beyond what the slats provide.

Queen, King, and California King: place the two pieces side by side to cover the full platform surface before placing the mattress on top. The seam will not be felt through the mattress.

For extra ventilation in very humid climates: stack two rugs.

Note: natural coir and latex can have a mild natural scent when new. Air in a well-ventilated space for a few hours before use if sensitive to smells.

Care
No regular maintenance required. The rug lives beneath the mattress and does its work passively.
Air in a well-ventilated space or outdoors periodically to release any accumulated moisture - once or twice a year when you rotate your mattress is sufficient.
Do not machine wash or submerge.
Spot clean only if needed with a damp cloth and mild soap. Allow to dry fully before replacing the mattress.

Note: the natural latex binder may have a mild scent when new. This dissipates with airing and is not a sign of chemical treatment.
